I used contrasting colours to create this funky knit sample intended for womenswear context in specific jumpers. The vibrant yellow linear shape stands out and balances against the deep purple.

Knit sample
I composed this final knit sample through development work through my sketchbook. I like the strong linear shapes the knitting machines had and also looking directly at knitwear i used the stitches to develop the triangles. Overall i think this composition works very well and the dark blue mohair stands out extremely well against the other two colours.
Final sample
Geometric, raised surface context
One of my final samples
In context a reversible fashionable cape for womenswear. My idea initially came from my manipulated papers. I wanted to have a statement neck line and incorporate the fur that was very evident in the 1930s when Donbros knitwear was discovered. I used a coral mohair for contrast and to provide a textured finish.
Sandra Backlund
Swedish fashion designer specialising in sculptural knitwear. I find Backlund’s designs aesthetics sculptural, architectural and dynamic. She strives to exaggerate and accentuate the female form, while fluctuating the proportions, producing designs that are sci-fi and warm. She works with heavy wool, paper and more recently hair. By fusing futuristic design with familiar materials, Backlund has manged to transform the very meaning of knitwear into a piece of sculpture. Instead of creating her garments by using traditional patterns, she designs whilst knitting, producing a more organic and streamlined result, show casing her talents.
